This paper examines what steps the US, along with South Korea, could take to reduce the role of nuclear weapons in its strategy towards North Korea. The text’s author also looks at 1) why reducing the role of nuclear weapons is important in terms of the pathologies of nuclear deterrence on the Korean peninsula; 2) how and why the US might take a lead in this effort; and 3) what action North Korea and China could take to reduce the role of nuclear weapons in North East Asia and the risk of nuclear violence in the region.
