This report examines security relations and issues between South Africa and the US leading up to 2008. It explores the political situation, the economy, US relations in terms of cooperation, diplomatic differences and trade, and prospects for the future. The author states that while South Africa has benefitted from export opportunities under the US-African Growth and Opportunity Act, there is divergence between US and South African policy regarding situations in Zimbabwe, Iran and Iraq. The author highlights US frustration with the South African government's position while serving on the UN Security Council.
