This paper examines the UAE's domestic and foreign policy development of expanded social and economic freedom. This, it argues has allowed the UAE to largely avoid the popular unrest following the Arab Spring, but domestic criticism has increased over the unchallenged power and privileges of the UAE ruling elite. The author further highlights concerns over the UAE’s oversight of a complex nuclear power program, however, these have been largely alleviated by the UAE’s development of strict controls, capable management, and international oversight.
