This paper examines the role of the interior ministry in security sector reform (SSR) through the experience of the US government in Iraq as well as previous peace and stability operations. The author argues that the US authorities failed to recognize the importance of reforming and restructuring the interior ministry in line with other reforms. Further, the author argues that the US needs to have effective counterparts in its own ranks in order to succeed in operational reform efforts.
