This paper outlines a comprehensive strategy to suppress violent Islamist extremism and combat the threat it poses to US interests. It offers a chronology of America's evolving response to violent Islamist extremism and an analysis of the threat and strategic principles to guide US actions. In addition, the authors provide a comprehensive plan — involving intelligence, diplomacy, military operations, strategic public engagement, law enforcement, finance and development, and homeland defense — to achieve US objectives.
