This chapter traces the development of a regional community in South Asia, from Indian independence and the emergence of other states to demographics and economic development. The author discusses the issues of population growth, the impact of globalization and security in the face of Islamic extremism. The article advocates the need for Indian leadership in the region and examines possible catalysts for bringing peace to South Asia.
