This paper traces the history of the world economy and the impact this has had on the development of Asian economies. The author examines various models of economic management and the role of the state, framed with reference to the 2008 financial crisis. He discusses the future of capitalism, the rise of China and India, and cases of state failure. The paper concludes with an outline of the Asian model of state management of national economies.
