This paper traces the development of a Bengali Muslim national consciousness, leading to the creation of the state of Bangladesh in 1971. The author argues that this group's historical experience is important in that it continues to condition their contemporary external behavior pattern. The paper begins by addressing the impact of British colonial policies, then discusses the communal separatism resulting. It finally explores the 'Pakistan experiment' and its influence on Bengali nationalism.
