This paper assesses Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's position in the 2009 presidential election as well as that of his challengers. The author argues that a change of president is a serious possibility, the impact of which could be felt in significant ways in Iran’s foreign policy, including with respect to relations with the US. However, he adds, such a change would not on its own be enough to facilitate either US-Iranian rapprochement or a breakthrough on the nuclear question.
