This brief addresses the role of private contractors in US Government Security Sector Reform (SSR). It outlines the three primary benefits gained from using private sector firms, namely surge capacity, special expertise and political acceptability. It then highlights the three main negative aspects - cost, reliability and integration issues. Following this, the author discusses common misconceptions about private contractors before providing recommendations for the future.
