This report provides information on the political debate in the US over whether to permit or refuse energy development in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) in Alaska. Development advocates argue that ANWR oil would reduce US energy dependence on the Middle East and boost the economy in Alaska and in other US states. Opponents argue that intrusion into the unique ecosystem cannot be properly justified in economic terms and that the Alaskan oil quantities would provide little energy security.
