This report provides basic information on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, two mortgage facilitators and government-sponsored entities (GSEs), put into complete government conservatorship on 7 September 2008. It details the US government's intervention and the potential cost to taxpayers. The report notes that as a result of the move, the US taxpayer stands behind roughly US$5 trillion of GSE debt.
