This publication looks at the benefits of euro area membership and examines the effects of the global financial crisis on non‐euro area members. The author explains that in several of the non-member countries, exchange and interest pressure has been intense and that some countries have seen their currencies lose value significantly. The publication argues that the need to carry out expansionary policies during the global crisis has exposed disagreements between member states. The author takes up the question of policy coordination.
