This paper discusses the political situation in Sri Lanka following the defeat of the Tamil Tigers in May 2009. The author argues that to ensure a sustainable peace, the government would need to win the confidence of the minority cultural groups, work toward reconciliation, and address the root causes of the conflict. Simultaneously, it would be necessary to repair a dysfunctional democracy whose institutions were significantly eroded in the course of decades of war-induced Emergency Rule, which the government still has not lifted.
