This paper examines the state of the European Parliament in its new term. The author argues that old coalitions will continue to shape politics in the new parliament, despite gains made my right-wing parties in the last elections. Although new members and the possible ratification of the Lisbon Treaty will likely change the shape and direction of parliamentary discussions, increased powers granted to national parliaments over the European Parliament might cut its overall power in the legislative process.
