This paper explores the problem of trade in stolen oil, or 'blood oil,' which the author describes as posing an immense challenge to the Nigerian state. According to the author, illegal oil trade harms Nigeria's economy and fuels a long-running insurgency in the Niger Delta. The paper first explores the politico-economic environment in the Niger Delta, which provides a fertile ground for oil bunkering. The author describes the blood oil business before examining Nigerian and international attempts to tackle the problem. In the end, she puts forward recommendations for tackling blood oil.
