This article examines controversies faced by India's special economic zones (SEZs). It focuses on ambiguities in real estate purchase laws and rules for determining state compensation. It also looks at flaws in urban management when designing SEZs and the increase of zone developers who contemplate exits due to low export prospects in light of the global financial crisis. The article also examines the constitutional setting of SEZs, which charge for maintenance services that would otherwise be provided by constitutionally approved local councils.
