This paper profiles Jacob Zuma, the president of the Republic of South Africa and the African National Congress (ANC) on the eve of the appointment of his first cabinet. The first section looks at the cabinet he has chosen and how it has been assembled to keep the economic conservatives in the driving seat. The second section looks at his first actions as president and argues that although he is a wholly different man to Mbeki, he is unlikely to take a wholly different approach.
