This report discusses the role and organization of the European Parliament (EP), its growing influence and ongoing challenges, as well as the relationship between the US and the EP. The European Parliament (EP) is one of the three key institutions of the 27-member European Union (EU), and the only EU institution whose members are directly elected. The current EP has 736 members. The most recent EP elections were held on June 4-7, 2009. Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) serve five-year terms.
