This report examines the security-related situation in the newly independent states (NIS) area and the motivations for NATO's interest in the co-operation with its Eastern partners. It contains a description and assessment of relations and co-operation between NATO and individual Eastern partners: Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan. The report also provides general conclusions concerning NATO's policy toward Eastern partners and specifically addresses the role of Poland in this context.
