This paper analyzes the relations between the countries joining the Schengen Agreement and their immediate eastern neighbors, namely Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. It is composed of three parts. Part one analyzes the circumstances of the Schengen enlargement's impact on the neighboring countries. Part two identifies the main consequences of the Schengen area enlargement and presents the opinions of the neighboring countries on the subject. Part three proposes measures that the EU and the countries acceding to the Schengen area could take in order to avoid creating a new 'iron curtain' on their eastern border, yet without compromising their security.
