This Peace Brief discusses six issues affecting the north-south dynamic in Sudan, which the author believes are not sufficiently covered in the contemporary literature on Sudanese politics. Among the issues addressed are the uncertainties regarding the popular consultation process; the fate of southerners living in northern Sudan if the 2011 referendum resulted in southern secession; the participation of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement in the presidential election; southern decentralization and the ability of local governments in the south to deliver basic services; and the nature of a possible new northern state in case the 2011 referendum results in secession.
