This paper evaluates the Pakistani military under the leadership of General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, who became the Chief of Army Staff in November 2007. The author suggests that General Kayani is reluctant to interfere in domestic Pakistani politics. With regard to external threats and challenges, the author argues that General Kayani is unlikely to bring about radical change in the military's policy towards India or Afghanistan.
