This paper elaborates on negative, underlying trends which are gathering momentum as a result of an increasing cycle of violence in the North Caucasus. The authors concentrate on the widening cycle of violence and the departure of ethnic Russians to more peaceful regions, which impacts on the economies of the eastern republics in the North Caucasus through the loss of skilled workers.
