This paper examines the substantial economic and political disparities across India's southern and northern states. The authors present the research objectives supported with data on fundamental economic phenomena such as per capita income, poverty rates and investment flows across the southern and northern states. This is followed by a literature survey. The authors conclude by providing a description of trends in various explanatory factors – human capabilities; skills and awareness; resources and the efficiency of their utilization; the extent of urbanization; good governance including law and order; and infrastructure.
