This report details US foreign assistance to North Korea. It notes that from 1995 to 2008, the US provided North Korea with over $1.3 billion in assistance, about 50 percent food aid and 40 percent energy assistance. As of March 2014, barring an unexpected breakthrough, there appears little likelihood the Obama Administration provides large-scale assistance of any type to North Korea in the near future. The authors point out that the Obama administration has pledged to provide large-scale aid if North Korea takes steps to irreversibly dismantle its nuclear program.
