This paper analyses the peace prospects in Colombia with regards to President Uribe's quest for re-election in 2006. The authors argue that regardless of whether his candidacy will be authorized, the government needs to complement its military strategy toward insurgent groups with a political agenda that includes strengthening the rule of law, improving rural public infrastructure, and boosting rural economic and social development. The paper reviews the re-election strategy of the president, assesses the positions of the different insurgent groups as well as the diplomatic efforts of the government in dealing with them, and also makes concrete recommendations for improving the general security situation in Colombia.
