This working paper examines the relative competitiveness of Indian exports in the Chinese market as a key factor in explaining the imbalance in bilateral trade. The authors argue that the integration trajectories of the two countries in world trade highlight two divergent paths - while China is a major producer and supplier for the rest of the world, India's role in global trade has been as more of a consumer. They also delibrate on the future prospects of Indian experts in the Chinese market and explore the potential of a bilateral trade pact in this regard.
