This paper assesses the possibility of the euro replacing the US dollar as the dominant global currency. The author outlines both the euro's strengths vis-a-vis the dollar, as well as its handicaps, particularly the euro area's fragmented banking and capital market, and the lack of strong and predictable governance in the eurozone. The author also provides a history of dominant currencies.
