This publication examines the similarities between the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC) and its relationship to the drug economy in Colombia and the Taliban and its relationship to the drug economy in Afghanistan. The author argues that these similarities do not lie in the loss of ideology and the transformation into a pure profit‐driven organisation. Rather, she contends, both the FARC and the Taliban are deriving substantial political capital from the drug trade, regardless of their ideologies and the intensity of their beliefs.
