This briefing discusses the impact of the provincial elections held in Iraq in January 2009, as well as Iraqi perspectives on continued US involvement. The authors note the development of a popular political consciousness as a positive sign of political progress. They argue that Iraqis want the US to continue developing Iraqi security forces, prevent conflict escalation between Kurdish and Arab groups and secure Iraqi borders.
