This paper provides an analysis of the EU's political, economic and security relations with Japan, China and North Korea. At the same time, the author outlines the Union's overall role and engagement in Asian security. He touches on issues such as the lack of inner European policy coordination, human rights violations, trade and investment, institutional cooperation as well as humanitarian aid. The author concludes that the extent of European cooperation with these Asian states depends heavily on the political system of the respective nation and the EU’s perception thereof.
