This paper analyzes how the ruling party, the Zimbabwe African National Union – Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF), has utilised a critical resource, land, to justify the abuse and violation of its citizens’ rights in its quest to maintain its hegemonic position in the post-colonial state of Zimbabwe. It also points to the importance of safeguarding human rights in states in transition. The conflicts over land and intolerance for political opposition are at the locus of the violation of human rights in Zimbabwe.
