This paper discusses the events surrounding the December 2001 election of President Didier Ratsiraka and the political crisis that was to bring the giant island state of Madagascar to the brink of civil war and institutional disintegration. It examines the role of the Organization for African Unirt (OAU) as well as of other foreign countries.
