This paper reviews the restructuring of South Africa's defense and arms industry. It shows the rapid growth of the arms industry from 1961 to 1989, driven by the government's perception of external threats to its apartheid regime. The author discusses the defense review and policy developments in the aftermath of apartheid, as well as the defense spending and budget.
