This paper reviews political party funding to show that even 'old’ democracies have not yet found a method for optimizing the funding of political competition. It contends that for countries in transition, sustainable democracy requires constant institutional nurturing before funding scandals reassert their retrograde influence. In light of party funding/donations scandals in South Africa, the analysis suggests alternatives that can be adopted to secure democracy.
