Gas interconnectors play a pivotal role in opening up the European gas markets to competition and so to create a single market for natural gas in which consumers are free to chose their own supplier. Moreover, in linking different gas transmission systems throughout Europe, interconnectors increase the flexibility of the gas network benefiting Europe's security of supply.
