This report provides an overview of US federal debt and consequent debt limits. It summarizes the US debt history and legislation referring to debt, and outlines the actions taken by US congress, the treasury, and the President. In particular, it highlights the historic process of altering debt restrictions in order to give the US Treasury more flexibility in debt management and modernizing federal financing.
