On 4 March 2010, the Foreign Affairs Committee of the US House of Representatives voted by a narrow margin to recognize the massacre of up to 1.5 million Armenians, “conceived and carried out by the Ottoman Empire from 1915 to 1923”, as genocide. The Turkish response to the House vote was fast and furious. Within a day's time, the government recalled its ambassador from Washington.
