On 1 March 2006, Italy's center-right Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi addressed a rare joint session of the US Congress. Speaking in the midst of a heated domestic electoral campaign, Berlusconi stressed Italy's solidarity with the US. There are good reasons for optimism on the prospect of US-Italy relations. A look at three of the most important issues in contemporary US-Italy relations illustrates this opinion.
