This paper provides an overview of the situation in Iraq since the end of Saddam Hussein’s regime in 2003, with a particular focus on the level of stability in the country since the 2011 US withdrawal. It also examines Iraqi intra-state conflicts and religious violence in the state with a particular focus on the Islamic State crisis, and assesses the legacy of the Iraqi Security Forces and US influence in Iraq.
