This article shows the negative impact the abiding conflict in the Western Sahara has on relations between the Maghreb states and their Euorpean neighbors by undermining peace and security in the region. The only solution, according to the author, seems to be a just and honorable solution for all involved parties. In a brief overview, the author provides background information on the conflict and the different initiatives aimed at solving it. However, these initiatives have not been fruitful for a number of reasons. The author concluldes by proposing steps towards a lasting peace, such as a genuine democratisation process.
