The global financial crisis that erupted in late 2007 in the US, and which stemmed from policies implemented over the past three decades, has highlighted, the author argues, a severe problem of financial governance within countries and in the international context itself. The international financial institutions failed to act with enough energy and effectiveness to confront the crisis in its infancy because they are also facing a crisis of legitimacy and representativeness.
