This report provides an outlook and analysis on potential terrorist and counter-terrorist activities in 2005. The author mentions Iraq, Palestine, Kashmir and Chechnya as the continued hot spots of conflict and turmoil, and states that in order to effectively combat, contain, and prevent terrorism, the international community must not only target the terrorist operational and conceptual infrastructure, but must also aim to significantly reduce the spread of extremist ideologies, that are the root of all terrorist motivations. The author emphasizes that it is essential for the United States and its allies in Europe and the Muslim world to inhibit the religious and extremist misuse of Islam by terrorists and fanatics, and that success in that endeavor will prove vital to effectively combating and preventing terrorism in the future.
