This paper discusses the emergence of opposing political forces in Russia in the context of the upcoming 2012 elections. The author argues that the credibility and legitimacy of Putin’s leadership may have been damaged, but that nevertheless, the development of a credible alternative in the form of new ideas and leaders will require years – not weeks or months.
