This is a transcript of a speech by Jonathan Steele on the US and Soviet interventions in Afghanistan. He compares and contrasts the two interventions, examining Russian mistakes which haunt the Americans today as they face the same challenges. He also analyzes the origins as well as the success of the interventions and discusses the obstacles to peace negotiations.
