Against the background of international condemnation and accusations of crimes against humanity, this policy brief discusses whether the Syrian regime can survive the protests of 2011. The UN Security Council statement denouncing Syria suggests that internal protests will be reinforced by growing pressure on the regime from the outside. The author contends that this external pressure encourages the opposition to continue to act, damages the Asad regime on the cognitive level, and could also have operational ramifications.
