Dec 2000

This issue reflects on the state of democracy in Africa in the year 2000. Political reforms in the Kingdom of Swaziland, election unrest in the Ivory Coast and Tanzania, the implications of AIDS for national security, and gender issues related to conflicts in Africa are discussed. In addition, the prospects of peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo, democracy movements in North Africa, and natural resource conflict are examined. It also provides an overview of conflict spots in Africa, focusing on five regions: North Africa, West Africa, Central Africa, East Africa and Southern Africa.
