This article examines the possibility of the normalization of the relations between Israel and the Arab States. It argues that this will be hard in the context of the rise to power of political parties with Islamic ideology in North Africa. Additionally, experience shows that the working groups and international fora related to normalization were normally suspended when the political process with the Palestinians got stuck. It may according to the author be necessary to seek a more practical and less ambitious definition of normalization and to realize the opportunities latent in this situation.
