This report evaluates the costs and benefits of the nuclear arms control treaties between the United States of America and the Soviet Union/Russian Federation. The author assesses the costs the START treaties, but also the costs of unilateral nuclear rearmament and the recurring costs of nuclear arms. Comparing the costs of the nuclear arms race with the costs of arms control the author shows clearly the benefits of the latter, with this just being the fiscal benefits. Harder to ascertain are the security and environmental benefits.
